2004
Most Endangered List |
|
The Kansas
Preservation Alliance, Inc. has publicized a list of endangered
historic sites for several years. By highlighting important
buildings in need of restoration or rehabilitation, we have
tried to help local, grassroots preservationists reach their
goals. One outstanding such effort was the 1999 listing of 39
buildings, all over a century old, at the Eisenhower VA in
Leavenworth. In part, due to our efforts, the 39 buildings were
listed on the National Trust for Historic Preservation’s Most
Endangered for 2000. Now, redevelopment instead of demolition
is about to begin. |

Brick Streets of Kansas –
What first tells you that you have arrived in an old town more
than Brick streets. In the early 20th century, there
were many brick-making plants across Kansas and residents were
happy to go from dirt to paved brick streets. This nomination
was submitted by Von Rothenberger of Osborne where heavy
equipment used to remove the brick street and replace it with
concrete caused a wall of the Historic theater to collapse.
Belleville now requires all repairs to their brick streets to be
done with brick, not asphalt. Hopefully, this thematic
nomination will raise awareness of this important part of the
character of Kansas Towns. |

The Caldwell
Opera House – nominated by Karen Sturm and the Caldwell
Historical Society. The town of Caldwell is known as the
“Border Queen” being near the Oklahoma state line, it was the
first Kansas town cattle drovers came to on their way north.
The Opera House is now owned by the Caldwell Historical Society
and their goal is to once again have performances entertain the
citizens. The Kansas State Historical Society has just
announced this opera house is one of the eight
they will
research in depth. |

The Pottawatomie County Fair
Pavilion at Onaga - The octagonal exhibition hall was built
in 1921. Onaga was a thriving railroad town and the county
fair was one of the most important social events of the year.
When this unique structure is restored, it will contain exhibits
to show our increasingly urban population what the fair meant to
the farmers, ranchers, and their families. This nomination was
prepared by Dr. Deanna Fairbanks and the Friends of the Fair
Pavilion. |
