CRITERIA |
| AWARDS FOR
EXCELLENCE NOMINATIONS |

| Kansas
Preservation Alliance Awards are presented annually for
historic preservation projects demonstrating
excellence and for individual or group efforts to
promote historic preservation in Kansas. |
|
|
Category I – Historic Preservation Projects |
|
| For
the first category – historic preservation projects –
properties must meet the criteria for listing on the
National Register of Historic Places and have an
association with significant events or persons in Kansas
or U.S. history. National Register criteria are
described on the National Park Service website
http://www.cr.nps.gov/nr/listing.htm Properties must
possess distinctive characteristics of type, period, or
method of construction or style of architecture and/or
provide information important to the history or
prehistory of Kansas. |

| All
work performed on a property considered for this
category must meet The Secretary of the Interior’s
Standards for the Treatment of Historic Properties.
These standards are described on the National Park
Service web site

Projects may represent any of
the four treatment approaches – Preservation,
Rehabilitation, Restoration, and Reconstruction.
Nominations for KPA Awards should identify the
preservation treatment that the project exemplifies. |

| To be
eligible for KPA Awards for Excellence, preservation
work on the project must be substantially completed by
December 31 of the previous year. |

Category II – Preservation Advocacy |
|
| Kansas
Preservation Alliance Awards for Excellence in
Preservation Advocacy are given to individuals,
organizations, and institutions that have carried out
exemplary efforts to promote historic preservation in
Kansas. Advocacy efforts may have resulted in
improvements in preservation legislation, education, or
funding; in the development of historic districts,
preservation and/or conservation easement programs; or
other local, regional, or statewide preservation
achievements. Advocacy efforts may be recent or may have
taken place over an extended time period. |

Honorable Mention
Awards may be given in either category. |
|
|
Nominations must include the completed KPA nomination
form and up to five 4”x 6” color photographs and ten to
fifteen digital 300 DPI, 1600 x 1200 (jpeg format) pix
on a compact disk. Photos should illustrate “before”
and “after” work of the project and should include
overall views as well as details. A description of the
nominated project that illustrates why an award is
deserved as well as how the project met the Secretary of
the Interior’s Standards shall be attached to the form.
The deadline for submitting nominations is January 31 of
the year in which the awards are to be presented. |
