Endangered Places

Since 1993, the Kansas Preservation Alliance has attracted critical attention to threatened historic resources through the Endangered Historic Places program.  Modeled after the National Trust for Historic Preservation's list of America's 11 Most Endangered Historic Places, KPA’s biannual Endangered Historic Places list of threatened Kansas properties strives to highlight important historic resources throughout Kansas that are in jeopardy of being lost if action is not taken soon to save them.

Since its inception, the program has generated interest, recognition and assistance for over 90 properties across the state.  The 2010 list included buildings in Ottawa, Chase, Riley, Sedgwick, Osage, Douglas, and Butler counties.

Nominate an Endangered Property

Do you know of an irreplaceable historic building or site that is threatened by neglect, insufficient funds, inappropriate development, insensitive public policy, or other perils?  If so, this is your opportunity to help save it.

The Endangered Historic Places is compiled from nominations submitted by the public.  Selections are based on the significance of the property to the community, state, or nation, as well as the nature and immediacy of the threat to the property.

The deadline for submitting nominations has been extended to March 24, 2012 and must be postmarked by that date.
